When he held her hand

"They lived a happy life"

When he held her hand,
She was a young girl.

They walked and talked,
And often he’d take her for a twirl.

When she became a young woman,
He got down on one knee.

He asked her to stay and become his wife,
She smiled and kissed him, and they started their life.

As husband and wife they lived their days,
Raising the children, and giving them praise.

Still he held her middle aged hand,
Rubbing the finger adorned with the wedding band.

The children grew up, went off on their own,
It was courage, confidence and wisdom them they’d shown.

Now it was just this man and his wife,
Together they should live out their life.

But one day he became very ill,
His heart couldn’t be healed with a pill.

By his bedside she sat, day and night,
Asking him not to give up, and for his life to fight.

And then on that morning, his heart beat no more,
Surrounded by his wife, his kids, for him they adore.

One last smile, last breath he took,
He gave her his last loving look.

She kissed his lips and whispered her love,
For this man, she thanked her God up above.

So today the woman stands all alone,
Her hand is empty.

But her heart is full with love,
For the man she had known.
