folded the intricate universe
within you when longing
couldn’t keep me here anymore.
I still read your pages by candlelight
to see if the words revealed more to you,
golden glows flicker against ink
that may as well have been blood.
You wanted me to memorize every night,
to see my own silhouette in loops,
slants and hexameter flows.
But this map is a note passed between lovers,
held over flames just to make me remember
exactly what it is to burn.
My touch may have turned you to stone,
to a whispering still sentinel,
I know so much better now,
I know how to break those locks,
the granite encasing your heart.
I know how to fill the dark vacuum
that collapsed stars leave behind.
But something cold remains in your eyes
and it’s too familiar to keep me here,
maybe that is what has always
rippled through our air.
Or maybe I just needed to look closer,
to fold with you into the universe
I once drew so very close to.
