The Cost of Love

Font Size

I languish in the bed, lying on top of the cover
Old memories surface, trying to recover

Ghosts of the past, they fill my mind
How have they been, have the years been kind

I close my eyes and their faces appear
They slide past, year after year

Dozens of women, some young and some old
Each important, the truth be told

Their scents, their voices, their bodies and souls
Imprinted in me, they filled the holes

In my life at the time, they shared with me
Themselves, their bodies, with me they were free

Each remembered, revered and respected
Each different, some not what was expected

Lust and desire, sometimes love and hurt
Feelings that came with the lift of each skirt

You lay down beside me, your body with mine
The memories fade, like the passage of time

Your scent, your body, your soul fills me now
Displacing the others, I’m not sure how

Completing me, sharing, assuaging my fears
You have been my life for the last thirty years

Displacing all others, their memories not lost
They brought me to you, that was the cost
