Are We Ever Lost

"What happens when we come to the end? Are we ever lost in this day and age?"

For a moment, I thought I’d lost you.
Emotions welled up inside of me,
The uncontrollable floodgates opened,
And yet, through all the tears,
You were there.

In an isolated fragment,
Suspended in space and time,
I focused on the clear facts,
Denying everything, especially grief,
And I saw you lying there.

All those years of love and happiness,
A fast-forward replay of my mind,
The smiles, the love, the sex,
Our children,
They were all there.

Motionless and in denial,
And amongst the chaos,
My periphery vision registered,
Doctors shaking their heads,
Nurses who wouldn’t give up,
“One, two, three,” breathe…

The waiting room was bare, inhospitable,
The man in white shook his head,
Those words of ‘Sorry’ were…
What were they?
If not the words of compassion.

But then – a light bulb moment occurred,
I hit the start button, Swiped the screen,
Hit contacts, then favourites,
And then I clicked on your profile,
And there you were, safe and sound.
