but I saw it for something else.
The signs were there, so clearly to see,
but I was looking in another direction.
Whenever I needed something, anything,
she was there and gave it freely.
Her laugh, her smile, her body
were all things I took for granted.
Her needs were simple and yet
I couldn’t come through for her when she needed me.
She brightened the room and my mood
but I, I lived in the darkness.
Always there, always supportive,
always giving herself to me, yet
I couldn’t see her only true need was to be loved by me.
I pushed her away, fearing to voice
what I knew to be true and absolute.
They were simple words, just ten small letters
that could change our lives forever,
but neither of us would say them.
On the day we ended, she said goodbye in a note
and my heart was broken forever.
Not by leaving, not by saying goodbye,
but because of the two simple words she used at the end;
“Love always.”
