Across the World From Me

"Written for the love of my life..."

Sitting alone, again, on a sweet September evening.

You’re so far away and yet you permeate my every thought

I see your face in the clouds as they sail across the sky

I hear your voice as the waves crash upon the shore

Water curling over and toppling the sand with its foamy white froth

The sky takes on a pastel hue deepening as it reaches the horizon

The leaves of the palm trees wrestling as I sip my glass of wine

Wind-blown hair dancing as the sun creeps lower

While the cat comes to curl up as if becoming my second skin

Resting her head on my lap as she shares her comforting purr

I see a couple walking, holding hands

Her laughter pierces the balmy air

A pang of jealousy washes over me, but then I remember

All the ways you find to remind me

That I’m the center of your world

I smile again and move to rise

Placing my hands upon the railing

Slowly I lean back to see the sky up above

This same sky that is above your head right now, albeit thousands of miles away,

Across the world from me

Suddenly, I feel closer to you as I watch the sun dip it’s fiery toes into the dark blue water

Then sinking the whole of its orange-red body into the gulf

Knowing that you won’t be gone forever

I close my eyes and pretend you’re right here with me holding my hand as well as my heart.

And I’m no longer sitting alone.
