The Promise

"I promise to love you always..."

Your hand dwarfs mine as you hold it tight,

Walking along the glorious shore,

The sunlight dances across the water,

And the waves lap playfully at our feet.

No words are spoken, none are needed,

Our hearts have a language all their own.

A stolen glance, and a wistful smile

Say more than words could anyway.

We stop to take in the glorious view,

The sun, the sky, the blue-green waters,

But the sight that holds the most beauty

Is the promise that shines from within.

The promise came many years before,

When time-worn faces looked anew,

Its power watches over us,

And grows in strength as years go by.

A spirited girl, a clever boy,

Two souls so destined to be one,

We pledged our love to till death do part,

And the promise became our solemn vow.

Misunderstandings and angry words

Tried hard to damage the love we share,

But the promise was bigger than both of us,

And we always circled back to each other.

We’ve weathered many tumultuous storms,

Yet, we resurfaced just battered and bruised.

For the promise was made and meant to be kept,

It’s a bond that can never be broken.

For better or worse are not empty words,

They’re a pledge that we hold in our hearts,

Each new day we commit to each other,

And the promise is once more renewed.

We both sigh as you move to embrace me,

As we walk up the beach toward our home

We know strength, peace, joy, and devotion,

For the promise keeps our love alive.

As the moonlight reflects off the water

And your arm slides around me in bed,

The scent of your body draws me in close

And the promise carries us away.
