Singing Old Love Songs

Sisyphus

If I could I’d sing to you,

and even though my voice might crack,

or stray off key or I’d forget the words

and have to hum those bars,

still, I’d look into your eyes

and hold my hands in front of me,

palms up and croon those words

Sinatra sang, “Oh night and day,

you are the one” and “All of me—

why not take all of me”–

and then, if I could, I’d reach for you

and hold you close and as we danced,

swaying cheek to cheek, I’d sing

into your ear, “you do something to me,

something that simply mystifies me,”

and I would feel you smile

and then I’d lift your hand

above our heads and twirl you

as I sang, “I can’t give you anything

but love, baby–that’s the only thing

I’ve plenty of, baby,” and we would laugh

because both of us are broke and nothing

really matters but this moment

when we’re dancing in the dark,

looking deep into each others eyes

as I sing to you, “Some enchanted

evening” and end, softly “once you

have found her never let her go”—

that’s when I’d pull you close again

and hold you tight and kiss

and then we’d look into each other’s eyes

while I sing—“for all we know,

we may never meet again–tomorrow

may never come, for all we know…”

and we’d be quiet, our tears

glistening in the candle light

and then I’d take a breath

thinking about more songs

I’d sing to you, if I could.
